The New York Jets’ need at wide receiver has been glaring since March.

As soon as the Jets released Davante Adams, they had one of the league’s weakest wide receiver units past the top spot. Garrett Wilson was a quality asset in the WR1 role, but there was little to no talent to be found outside of him.

The Jets did not do much to address the need. Between free agency and the draft, their most noteworthy additions were $2.75 million free agent pickup Josh Reynolds and fourth-round pick Arian Smith.

Through eight games, the Jets’ receiving unit struggled as much as one would expect, especially when Wilson was off the field. Then, the Jets got active on the trade market, finally adding the upside they’d been missing at wide receiver.

Before acquiring 2024 second-rounder Adonai Mitchell in the blockbuster Sauce Gardner trade, the Jets acquired another former second-round wideout in the less talked-about Michael Carter II trade: John Metchie.

Like Mitchell, whose film is impressive in its own right, Metchie’s film displays intriguing untapped upside despite his lack of career production to date. The 2022 second-round pick has been held back in the stat column by various obstacles, including a battle with leukemia in his rookie year and a lack of opportunities on stacked depth charts.

On film, though, Metchie shows fascinating tools for the Jets to work with. Some of those tools were put on display in the Jets’ latest game against the Patriots, when Metchie caught all three of his targets for 45 yards, one touchdown, and two first downs.

Could Metchie develop into a long-term keeper for the Jets at wide receiver?

We’re here to answer all of your questions about John Metchie in the latest Blewett’s Blitz breakdown.
