Throughout the New York Jets’ 23-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Charm City on Sunday, the self-inflicted wounds never stopped coming.
Gang Green committed six penalties and quietly handed Baltimore 81 free yards. In a game where every inch mattered, those mistakes added up fast.
Speaking to reporters after the loss, head coach Aaron Glenn assessed the penalties, particularly on the defensive side, and offered an unexpected answer from a coach who preaches accountability as loudly as anyone in the building.
“I just think the refs are looking at our guys, just in general. Before every game, they come and talk to both head coaches. It just seems like they’re looking at some of those calls, and I think for the most part, sometimes those calls are questionable calls, in my opinion. But they make them,” proclaimed Glenn.
“The one on IO [Isaiah Oliver], that was tough. The one on AZ [AZ Thomas] was tough. But you know what, the refs made the call. We’ve got to be able to overcome that.”
The penalty on Oliver that Glenn pointed to flipped the entire game around. Oliver was hit with a pass-interference call on Mark Andrews during a third-down passing attempt. This 34-yard swing dragged Baltimore across midfield and handed the Ravens a burst of momentum they desperately needed.
Baltimore stacked first downs with ease, hammering away until Derrick Henry muscled into the end zone to give the Ravens their first lead, 10-7, with 8:49 left in the third quarter. It was the moment the game turned into Baltimore’s hands, and the Jets never grabbed it back.
By the end of the matchup, New York made too many mistakes to give themselves any chance of clawing back and securing a road victory. Against a team like Baltimore, that’s a game you can’t win.
