According to head coach Aaron Glenn, the New York Jets have placed quarterback Justin Fields on injured reserve, officially ending his 2025 season.

“Man, we tried to see how we can get this to work, but it wasn’t getting as better as we would like it,” said Glenn. “So, we want to make sure we get a focus on that to make sure we get him better.”

Dealing with knee soreness, Fields missed the Jetsโ€™ Week 14 and 15 games and was relegated to emergency quarterback duties on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

It is uncertain whether Fields will need surgery.

The Ohio State product remains under contract for next season, and the Jets still owe him $10 million next season, but it appears that parting ways this offseason would make the most sense for both Fields and the Jets. The experiment was a calculated risk at the time, and it is clear that it didn’t work out.

After nine starts with the team, Fields was benched in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor. Throughout those nine starts, he led Gang Green to a rough 2-7 record and completed 63% of his passing attempts for 1,259 yards and seven touchdowns while tossing an interception.

His athleticism still showed up in meaningful ways, piling up 383 rushing yards on 71 carries with four touchdowns. However, the familiar issues that have followed him throughout his NFL career resurfaced far too often.

Fields frequently held the ball too long and struggled with ball security, putting it on the ground four times. Through nine weeks, his 3.14-second average time to throw was tied with New York Giants rookie Jaxson Dart for the second-highest mark in the league, trailing only Chicago’s Caleb Williams at 3.29 seconds.

With just two games remaining, New York has opted to shut him down, a decision that could also be the end of his brief tenure with the organization.
