Amidst the incredible vibes of a successful turnaround season, the New England Patriots, fresh off a 42-10 beatdown of the rival New York Jets, have received some of the worst news imaginable heading into postseason play.

All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery stemming from an incident on Dec. 2, according to Boston 25.

Diggs’ counsel has already said they are looking for ways to settle.

โ€œAs we speak, theyโ€™re working to come to an agreement on that,โ€ said Diggs’ attorney, Michael DeStefano.

The Patriots responded to the allegations with support for their star wideout.

โ€œThe New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon,โ€ the organization said in a statement. โ€œWe will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.โ€

Regardless of whether the Jets’ archrival can settle or not, the news surrounding Diggs is a massive blow to the Patriots as they gear up for their first playoff appearance in four seasons.

Diggs is the team’s leading receiver and a big reason why second-year quarterback Drake Maye has been considered an MVP candidate for most of the season.

The Jets know all too well how good Diggs is. He recorded 15 receptions for 206 yards and one touchdown in two games against Gang Green.

New England is hoping to judge their season more on just their success against a three-win Jets squad, though. Diggs’ legal troubles do nothing to help the organization at this point.

The 32-year-old receiver is set to be arraigned in court on Jan. 23, just two days before the AFC championship game. There are now considerable questions about the Patriots’ path forward after this news.

New England will host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday to close out the regular season. The Patriots have already secured their first AFC East title since 2019, but they are hoping to clinch the AFC’s No. 1 seed with a win and a Denver Broncos loss (vs. the Los Angeles Chargers).
