Who’s really in charge?
That question has lingered among New York Jets fans since the team hired head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey, with many wondering who has more authority.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Glenn broke down how Gang Green’s decision-making process works when it comes to adding players and overall decisions.
“Anytime we want to get a player, obviously, we have scouts that go out looking at players throughout the league. Moug [Darren Mougey] brings up a player; we both look at the player, and maybe this player can help us. Our process is usually like that. It’s never just a one-man show,” said the first-year head coach. “We collaborate quite a bit on players, on just about everything, to be honest.”
Many fans were quick to assume that Glenn was the head honcho, and it’s hard to blame them for doing so. He was hired before Mougey and team owner Woody Johnson referred to Mougey as Glenn’s “sidekick” during their introductory press conference in January.
Mougey and Glenn have made some solid decisions, particularly on defense. Defensive tackles Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs, whom the Jets acquired in August in exchange for negligible draft assets, have taken on starting roles and carried key leadership roles in the locker room. Briggs has played at a very high caliber as a pass rusher, establishing himself as a long-term building block, while Phillips has held his own as a starter.
It will be intriguing to see how Mougey and Glenn navigate this offseason, with over $90 million in projected cap space and four projected top-50 picks in April’s NFL draft.
