New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is scraping every corner to try and fill out his depleted coaching staff.
After the team “parted ways” with offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand on Tuesday, a report surfaced that indicated Glenn had reached out to longtime NFL head coach Jon Gruden to gauge his level of interest in joining the Jets’ coaching staff, per The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt.
According to Rosenblatt, Gruden wasn’t interested.
Gruden, who is currently employed by Barstool Sports as a media personality, spent the 2024 season as an advisor for the Milano Seamen of the European League of Football.
Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports and Gruden’s current employer, who is also a diehard New England Patriots fan, trolled Gang Green for reaching out to the 62-year-old, writing, “Top 1 most insulting job offers of all time,” on X/Twitter.
Gruden’s last role at the NFL level was with the New Orleans Saints in 2023, serving as a consultant, following his four-year stint as the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach.
Gruden is the second known veteran offensive coach the Jets have reportedly expressed interest in this offseason, as the team has been “linked” to former Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich.
Reich won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 as a non-play-calling offensive coordinator, while his last coaching job in the pros was in 2023 as the Carolina Panthers’ head coach, where he was fired in-season after a horrific 1-10 start.
Ultimately, it appears that Gruden, who has been out of the NFL coaching ranks for a few seasons, has no interest in joining Glenn’s coaching staff.
