Five coaches have put their names into contention for the offensive coordinator role on Aaron Glenn’s staff, thanks to the announcement that the five were interviewed for the position. Three of those names โ Frank Reich, Darrell Bevell, and Greg Roman โ have prior experience in calling plays.
The other two โ Ronald Curry and Lunda Wells โ are popular assistants around the league, but don’t have true play-calling or quarterback development experience.
Glenn’s job now is to find the right coordinator who fits what he needs for this Jets offense in 2026. The expectation at this moment is that the head coach will call the defensive plays next year, which means he will need to rely on a competent offensive coach to run the offense for him.
As rumors of second interviews begin to circulate, the more obvious their approach will be going forward.
All about experience
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported Saturday that Roman was among the coaches scheduled to have an in-person interview with the team. He did not mention any others.
But c’mon. It doesn’t take a genius to know who the other two finalists will be for the play-calling role.
For young defensive head coaches, finding an experienced offensive play-caller is extremely important. It gives a team a chance to find stability in a system and potentially develop quarterbacks the right way.
Roman, Reich, and Bevell have all done that throughout their careers. Roman has worked with Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson. Reich led a collection of pre-injury Carson Wentz, Andrew Luck, and Nick Foles. Bevell, on the other hand, helped establish Russell Wilson.
They all have play-calling experience. They all know what it takes to put up points in this league.
While Wells and Curry are two quality coaching candidates in this league, the Jets know exactly what they need.
It doesn’t take a genius to know who is going to be among the finalists for the Jets’ offensive coordinator job. The only question is which experienced offensive mind will be Glenn’s pick going forward.
