And New York Jets fans thought their choices for offensive coordinator were bad.

As Gang Green continues to look for a veteran leader on the offensive side of the ball, they are not the only organization looking to fill out their staff.

Some teams are choosing to hire young, inexperienced play-callers with excellent pedigrees. Others, like the Jets, prefer more experienced minds to stabilize their offense.

New York has concluded a second interview with former Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich. He joins Darrell Bevell and Greg Roman as the three longtime play-callers in the running to join the Jets’ staff under Aaron Glenn.

Many Jets fans weren’t thrilled with the choices the team interviewed for their open coordinator role. But if they were to compare the team’s current candidates with the one their cross-town rival just hired, it’s no contest.

The Jets have better people in the building for the OC role.

Giants add perspective for Jets

The New York Giants were widely commended for hiring John Harbaugh as their head coach. The belief is that Harbaugh’s success in Baltimore would lead to future success in East Rutherford, along with the inclusion of a top staff.

How’d that work out?

Well, after being spurned by Todd Monken, Harbaugh chose to hire former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for the offensive play-calling role.

Yes, Matt Nagyโ€”to call plays.

There’s an argument to be made that any of the Jets’ three finalists has a better resume than Nagy.

Kansas City’s offense took a major step back under Nagy over the last two seasons. They finished average to below average in key offensive categories like points and yards in 2024 and 2025. Despite reaching the Super Bowl in 2024, Kansas City was blown out on the game’s biggest stage thanks to a poor offensive performance. The Chiefs only got that far because of their defense.

Was Nagy the lone problem for the Chiefs? No. But the Chiefs have clearly performed better without Nagy than with him. Under Eric Bieniemy from 2018-22, the Chiefs led the league in scoring (30.1 points per game). Over the last three seasons under Nagy, they ranked 19th (21.9 points per game).

Across a four-year run as the Bears’ head coach (2018-21), Nagy led Chicago to 24th in scoring.

Jets fans should be thrilled with this hire for the Giants. Any of Reich, Bevell, and Roman clears the legacy that Nagy has built as an offensive mind around the league.

The Giants certainly have more offensive talent than the Jets, but Nagy wasn’t able to field a competitive offense with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. What makes anyone think he can do it with Jaxson Dart?

Harbaugh’s hire for the Giants was rightly celebrated. But he clearly had just as much of an issue finding someone to run his offense as Glenn is having with the Jets.

It’s a new perspective fans should keep an eye on as Gang Green continues its search for an offensive coach.
