Aaron Glenn’s revamped coaching staff is taking shape.
After hiring Frank Reich as the team’s offensive coordinator on Tuesday and Karl Dunbar as defensive line coach on Wednesday, the New York Jets hired Alfredo Roberts as their tight ends coach on Friday, per NFL Network’s Omar Ruiz.
While Glenn chose to release the majority of his coaching staff this offseason, tight ends coach Jeff Blasko departed on his own, as Todd Monken poached him to serve in the same role on his staff with the Cleveland Browns.
Roberts, 60, spent five years in the NFL (1988-93) as a tight end with the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys. Over his career, Roberts appeared in 80 games (36 starts), while reeling in 48 of his 92 targets for 450 yards and two touchdowns.
Since joining the NFL coaching ranks in 2003, this will mark the 60-year-old’s seventh stint as a tight ends coach in the pros, spending time in that same role with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-06), Cleveland Browns (2007-08), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-11), Indianapolis Colts (2012-15) and Los Angeles Chargers (2020), while coming off a five-year run as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ TE coach (2021-25).
During his time with the Steelers, he helped develop Pat Freiermuth, a second-round pick in 2021, who earned a lucrative four-year, $48 million contract extension with the team.
Under Roberts’ watch, Freiermuth ranked 12th among tight ends in receiving yards for the 2024 season (668) and third in touchdowns (7). In 2025, Freiermuth and free agent pickup Jonnu Smith combined for 706 yards and six touchdowns.
Roberts joins Dunbar as the second coach Glenn has hired this offseason from Mike Tomlin’s old staff in Pittsburgh.
