For the last few years, a significant percentage of the New York Jets fanbase has begged the organization to do everything in its power to target a singular football leader: former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.
Forget the fact that Tomlin’s most recent postseason victory came in the final days of Barack Obama’s presidency. New York needs a culture change, and fans believe Tomlin is the man to bring it.
The Jets may not agree. At least, based on the silence surrounding any Tomlin intrigue, it appears that way.
Instead, they are trusting Aaron Glenn to bring the cultural change sought by the organization. Even after a disappointing 3-14 rookie campaign, the organization believes the leadership at the top is strong enough.
That doesn’t mean Glenn isn’t searching for help. As Glenn continues to remake his coaching staff, the second-year coach and former Pro Bowl cornerback is taking a page out of Tomlin’s book, without hiring the Super Bowl winner.
It’s not the worst idea out there, either.
Jets’ Mike Tomlin connection
What’s the next best thing to hiring a coach like Tomlin? Here’s the answer: hiring coaches from his successful staff to aid in the roster’s current standing.
That’s precisely what the Jets’ head coach has done as of late.
Last week, the Jets hired Karl Dunbar to run their defensive line after almost a decade in Pittsburgh.
Dunbar was a celebrated hire due to his prior experience in New York and his work with T.J. Watt. Plus, Jets fans are familiar with the man, as he worked under Rex Ryan from 2012 to 2014.
Friday afternoon saw the Jets bring in their second former Steelers assistant.
Tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts was hired Friday afternoon, in the hopes that he’ll get the best out of Mason Taylor and Jeremy Ruckert. Roberts is a former NFL tight end who’s been a coach for the position since the late 90s.
Although the hope of landing a big fish like Mike Tomlin died a while ago, Aaron Glenn’s New York Jets are, at the very least, thinking about their coaching staff construction in a smart way.
