We already broke it down on film: Ty Simpson’s start to the 2025 season was every bit as dominant as Fernando Mendoza’s, if not better.

The numbers, which are supported by the film, speak for themselves. Through five games, Simpson was completing 70.3% of his passes for 9.4 yards per attempt with 15 total touchdowns to one turnover. He was firmly in the conversation for the first overall pick.

Then, Simpson’s stock began to slip.

Over his next five games, Simpson’s completion percentage plummeted to 63.9%, a drop of nearly seven points. He still threw nine touchdowns to one interception, but his yards-per-attempt dropped by over two yards to 7.3.

As Simpson’s numbers dwindled, Mendoza’s skyrocketed, and the quarterbacks’ draft stocks fluctuated accordingly. Mendoza slowly asserted himself as the clear-cut No. 1 quarterback in the 2026 draft class, while Simpson fell into a debate with Oregon’s Dante Moore for the No. 2 slot.

After a rough mid-season stretch, Simpson’s numbers declined even further over Alabama’s later games. His stock fell so far that, despite Moore going back to school, Simpson is widely viewed as a non-factor in the New York Jets’ decision at No. 2 overall.

Should that really be the case?

The film can give us that answer.

While Simpson’s numbers clearly declined, a thorough examination of his tape is necessary to understand what actually happened. Was he at fault for that decline due to the exposure of legitimate weaknesses in his game? Or did his production falter due to Alabama’s drops, shaky offensive line play, and lack of a run game?

It is also worth noting that Simpson began dealing with multiple nagging injuries at a certain point during the year. Did the film show any effects of those reported ailments?

We’re here to answer all of those questions on the latest episode of Blewett’s Blitz, where we will break down the All-22 film of Simpson’s 2025 performances against Missouri, Tennessee, South Carolina, LSU, and Oklahoma (games 6-10).
