After bringing back fullback Andrew Beck on Monday, the New York Jets have added a second re-signing to their free agency scorecard.
Building on their strong start to free agency, the Jets are searching for depth to support their strongest group from last season. They took a step forward in that mission by re-signing one of their backup tackles.
New York agreed to terms on a one-year contract to bring back former 2022 fourth-round pick Max Mitchell. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN was the first on the news on Wednesday afternoon.
The Louisiana product has started 17 games over four seasons with the Jets, logging snaps at every offensive line position except for center. His experience at guard is valuable, as the Jets are thin at the position following the free agent departures of Alijah Vera-Tucker and John Simpson.
In 2025, Mitchell played in 15 games for the Jets, starting three, though none of those starts came as a true offensive lineman. Rather, Mitchell carved out a niche in the Jets’ offense as a sixth lineman, playing 66 snaps in that role. He also played seven snaps at left tackle.
Re-signing Mitchell keeps a player in-house who is familiar with what the team wants to accomplish under head coach Aaron Glenn and offensive line coach Steve Heiden. He is a versatile backup who can man four different spots on the offensive line, and he can also be deployed as an extra blocker.
More moves are expected along the Jets’ offensive line as they continue to address their holes on the interior after losing Simpson and Vera-Tucker.
