A heavily rumored quarterback target for the New York Jets has landed elsewhere.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, free agent signal-caller Carson Wentz is re-signing with the Minnesota Vikings.
Wentz was frequently linked to the Jets since before the NFL’s legal tampering window opened on Monday, March 9. One report claimed that the Jets planned to add two veteran quarterbacks, with Wentz being among their preferred targets.
Geno Smith and Jacoby Brissett were also named in that report. Smith was acquired by the Jets in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, with the Jets giving up a late-round pick swap to nab Smith before the Raiders released him to the open market. Brissett remains a member of the Arizona Cardinals.
The connection between New York and Wentz was largely built around Wentz’s familiarity with Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich. Wentz was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles while Reich was their offensive coordinator. Under Reich’s leadership, Wentz helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LII.
Wentz later played under Reich with the Indianapolis Colts in 2021.
In 2025, Wentz started five games for the Vikings, leading them to a 2-3 record as he completed 65.1% of his passes for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions.
With Wentz sticking in Minnesota, the Jets’ search for quarterback depth continues. Currently, their quarterback room consists of Smith, Brady Cook, and Bailey Zappe.
Another veteran is expected to be added to either compete with or back up Smith, while the Jets remain a candidate to select a developmental quarterback at some point in the NFL draft.
