We’re just two days away from the unveiling of the 2026 NFL schedule. Some primetime games are already being announced, and each organization’s social media team already knows the upcoming slate.
But New York Jets fans will have to be patient.
In the meantime, the Jets’ list of potential Week 1 opponents is slowly narrowing down. It gives fans a chance to root for the best possible season-opening matchup that New York could hope for.
Best Week 1 matchup
Because the Giants are playing at home on Sunday to open the season, it’s not feasible for the Jets to get a home game (unless they play on Monday Night Football the next day).
Before we get into the best potential Week 1 matchups, it’s important to look through the road opponents that the Jets will see this year:
- Buffalo Bills
- Miami Dolphins
- New England Patriots
- Kansas City Chiefs
- Los Angeles Chargers
- Chicago Bears
- Detroit Lions
- Tennessee Titans
- Arizona Cardinals
We can already cross out several teams here.
Buffalo’s home opener is scheduled for Week 2. Kansas City is confirmed to be playing the Denver Broncos in Week 1.
The Patriots, Chargers, Bears, and Lions are all likely to land blockbuster matchups in Week 1.
That leaves the Dolphins, Titans, and Cardinals as the likeliest choices for the Jets’ season-opening opponent.
New York better hope for either the Dolphins or the Cardinals. The idea of Robert Saleh and the Titans getting revenge on the Jets is something the team shouldn’t want to worry about to open the year.
Between the two, it’s the Dolphins who the Jets should want as their Week 1 opponent.
Why Jets should want Dolphins
The Jets’ Week 1 opponent matters more this season than any other year in recent memory. That includes the Aaron Rodgers era, where the team was expected to be a Super Bowl contender, but never played like it.
The reason is that head coach Aaron Glenn is under immense pressure going into his second season at the helm of the organization. His first year barely cracked three wins, and many believe he’s on the hot seat.
Starting the season off on the right foot is extremely important, not only for Glenn’s standing as head coach but also for the fanbase.
Too long, Jets fans have been told to be patient or to “not let go of the rope,” despite the organization showing very little improvement on the field. After an 0-7 start last year, a victory in Week 1 would immediately tell fans that the team is heading in the right direction, and their patience is about to pay off.
A contest against a team like the Dolphins or even the Cardinals gives the Jets a golden opportunity to get that much-needed Week 1 win. A victory would be realistic with either of those two matchups.
It’s hard to envision a road win against the likes of Detroit or New England.
Unlike in years past, the Jets and their fans should care who they play in Week 1. More than any other year, it matters that they start 1-0.
