Well, after all, the New York Jets and the NFL’s other 31 teams won’t have a chance to land Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby this summer.
After it appeared that Sorsby had a strong chance of entering the supplemental draft, his case has taken a turn, and the signal-caller is expected to play at Texas Tech next season.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, a judge in Lubbock County, Texas, has granted Sorsby’s injunction, reinstating his NCAA eligibility for the 2026 season.
Sorsby was first investigated by the NCAA in April for placing thousands of bets dating back to 2022. Following their investigation, where he was found guilty of doing so, he completed a 35-day rehab program for his gambling addiction in Arizona.
At the end of May, the NCAA declined his request for reinstatement, making it increasingly likely that he would enter the NFL’s supplemental draft in July. However, he has now regained his eligibility after he and his attorneys filed an injunction.
In 12 games with Cincinnati last season, Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions on a 61.6% completion rate. He also added nine rushing touchdowns on the ground. Furthermore, according to Pro Football Focus’ overall grade, he was the fifth-ranked Power Four QB in the nation at 90.3, just two spots behind Fernando Mendoza, who went No. 1 overall in April’s draft.
After a surprise result in the case, the Jets and the NFL’s other 31 teams won’t have a chance to secure Sorsby at a lesser price this summer, and instead will most likely have to wait until the 2027 NFL draft.
