On Monday, the New York Jets extended guard Joe Tippmann on a four-year, $66.4 million contract, locking in all five of the team’s starting offensive linemen through the 2027 season.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed why the team felt the need to extend Tippmann.
“Character, first and foremost, of a guy who was competing at the center spot, and that’s something that we’ve done with a number of guys, is try to create competition,” Glenn said of Tippmann.
“He’s one of those guys that you want to be around for a long time just because how he is as a person and obviously how he is as a football player, so he’s taken on that role, did a damn good job for us, and the thing about it is he still has room to grow to be a better guard, so we’re looking forward to that going into next year.”
Due to a late injury to Alijah Vera-Tucker, Tippmann was named the team’s starting right guard for the 2025 season after spending the prior year as the squad’s center. There were some growing pains early on, but he quickly proved that he is worthy of the Jets’ starting right guard spot long-term.
From Weeks 7-18, Tippmann led all right guards with an 81.4 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, while forming a wall on the right side of the line next to rookie Armand Membou, who also excelled during his rookie campaign.
Now that he earned the extension he deserved, the Jets are hoping the Wisconsin product can take another stride at guard now that he is poised to hold the position down for the long haul.
