Another day, another accolade for Sauce Gardner.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the New York Jets’ star cornerback wrote about the city of Cincinnati celebrating the second anniversary of “Sauce Gardner Day,” which was established beginning in 2023. It is no surprise that Cinncinati honored the star cornerback. Gardner’s path of dominance started at the University of Cincinnati, where he allowed zero touchdowns throughout his three-year career. The city’s decree references this, saying, “Sauce Gardner did not allow a single touchdown to opposing teams on over 1,000 coverage snaps in those three seasons.”
His play resulted in winning AAC Defensive Player of the Year, All-American honors, and two straight AAC titles for his school. He also helped bring Cinncinati to their first-ever College Football Playoff game.
Gardner has continued rolling in the NFL, becoming a first-team All-Pro selection in his first two years and earning two Pro Bowl selections. He has shut down nearly every wideout who has opposed him and continues to improve in all facets of his game.
Heading into 2024, Gardner is closer than ever to the mountaintop. He already has some great accolades but has made it known that he is not settling for them.
If he can continue his consistent level of play, notch a few more interceptions, and help the Jets make a playoff push, Gardner could challenge for the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award. That would be another achievement for Gardner that is comparable, if not better, than having a day named after him.
