Voluntary work is over for the New York Jets, just as it is across the rest of the league.
Mandatory minicamp kicks off this week for all 32 teams. It’s a chance for the organization in Florham Park to see all of their perceived starters on the field at the same time.
With no major holdouts expected, most of the Jets’ major storylines center around the field of play. And that is exactly what they prefer going into the next few days at the very least.
Jets’ Minicamp Storylines
As is the case with any organization, the Jets open minicamp this week with plenty of major storylines. From their new starting quarterback to the many young players learning the ropes in the NFL, there are plenty of things for fans to follow along over the next few days.
Today, we break down some of the biggest storylines to watch going into minicamp this week.
Justin Fields’ Further Development
Justin Fields had some quality moments as the starting quarterback for the Jets through the first few weeks of offseason workouts. He isn’t in a true competition, and is clearly looking to learn a new offense under Tanner Engstrand.
While there have been some moments of struggles, it’s important for Fields to show continued improvement as the days go on.
At mandatory minicamp, he’ll continue to be a major talking point for the organization. The more development he shows, the better the Jets offense will look.
Practice Intensity
Through three weeks of voluntary workouts, the Jets have shown a type of intensity that is rarely seen at this time of year.
How will they look once practices become mandatory with all players being on the field?
The Jets have a coaching staff that loves competition. They have been very intentional on how they want their team to practice and play. How the organization looks over the next few days will be another example of that.
Rookie Standouts
New York is very high on their rookie class this year. Armand Membou continues to develop as a starting right tackle, Mason Taylor has excelled as a tight end, and plenty of late-round picks have had their own spurts of positive play.
How will they look when they are under the microscope even more during mandatory minicamp?
Nobody will become a Hall-of-Famer through minicamp practices, but it’s clear that the team wants to see even more from the rookie class moving forward.
WR2 Battle
The second starting receiver position outside of Garrett Wilson remains a major question for the Jets. Plenty of receivers are competing for a starting role like Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, and young players like Malachi Corley and Arian Smith.
This position battle won’t be won in mandatory minicamp, but fans might gain some clarity over the next few days.
Edge Rusher Depth
New York has plenty of edge rushers competing for snaps behind Will McDonald and Jermaine Johnson. Micheal Clemons, Rashad Weaver, Eric Watts, and rookie Tyler Baron are among the players battling it out for a roster spot.
In addition, Will McDonald’s added weight and improvement as an all-around edge rusher has been a highlight of voluntary workouts.
