With the retirement of C.J. Mosley, New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood is ready to be the captain of New York’s defense.
His efforts have caught the eye of one of the team’s star players.
Speaking on the “Up & Adams Show”, All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams praised Sherwood’s leadership, even calling him a “baby” Mosley.
“I firmly believe the Mike linebacker is the leader of your defense, and to see [Sherwood] take that role and just do the things is like, ‘Bro, you’re like a baby C.J. in my eyes,'” said Williams.
“And Quincy Williams of course is an unbelievable leader on that defense, but Jamien Sherwood is taking that extra step, running the defense, learning, leaning on the defense, and just taking the bull by the horns to come out like, ‘This is my defense, I’m going to run this defense because I’m the Mike.'”
Fresh off a breakout campaign, linebacker Jamien Sherwood re-signed with the New York Jets this offseason on a three-year deal that could reach $45 million, including $30 million guaranteed.
Sherwood, 25, was voted Curtis Martin Team MVP in 2024 after leading all NFL linebackers with 98 solo tackles. The former Auburn standout also added two sacks and three pass breakups, solidifying himself as a key piece in the heart of New York’s defense.
Sherwood’s 73.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus ranked 10th among 64 qualifying linebackers last season, underscoring his emergence as one of the league’s most consistent second-level defenders.
Now, with Mosley officially hanging up the cleats, Sherwood is no longer just a protege; he’s the voice of the huddle. Trusted by teammates and praised by stars, he’s ready to lead the Jets’ defense into a new era under head coach Aaron Glenn and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
