It’s the word New York Jets fans are tired of hearing:
Patience.
Ever since their season ended in early January, fans have clamored for heads to roll in several different roles within their coaching staff. High on the list have been position coaches on the defensive side of the ball and the quarterbacks coach.
With no official announcements, however, fans are growing concerned about the lack of changes. The more time passes without any official changes to the staff, the more fans worry that necessary changes won’t be made after all.
The answer to the “why” however, is far easier to manage.
Why Jets haven’t announced coaching changes
It’s extremely rare for NFL organizations to announce when they interview positional coaches. Interview announcements are typically reserved for a head coach or coordinator.
Therefore, Jets fans shouldn’t be worried yet about whether or not certain position coaches will be returning. They’ll eventually find out how the key roles are addressed, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
A new defensive coordinator, whether it is a veteran like Wink Martindale or a less experienced candidate like Daronte Jones, may have other assistants they want to bring in. Instead of firing some of the current assistants on the spot, the Jets can simply keep those decisions close to the vest until they land a new coordinator.
The lack of news surrounding the Jets is not due to them being unprepared. It’s about operating in the kind of silence the Jets preferred last offseason. Changes will be coming in several key areas.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said during the team’s final press conference of the season that he would review his entire coaching staff over the coming weeks. That is currently going on. Just because coaching changes haven’t been announced yet, it doesn’t mean they will not be coming in the near future.
