Did Jon Gruden deny an offer from Aaron Glenn and the New York Jets to coach the team’s offense?

Not according to Super Bowl-winning coach himself.

In an interview with 95.3 WDAE, a sports radio station in Tampa, Fla., Gruden shot down the report that claimed the Jets reached out to him and were denied. Gruden called the report “stupid” and “ridiculous.”

“There’s a lot of reports we’re not going to get into. As you know, there’s a lot of stupid rumors out there,” Gruden said. “Some of these reports are ridiculous. Let’s just say that there was never anything from the Jets and I wish them well in their search for a new offensive coordinator.”

Gruden’s statement is in response to a report on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, which claimed that “the Jets reached out to Jon Gruden about the idea of joining Aaron Glenn’s staff, [and] Gruden wasn’t interested in the job,” citing “multiple sources.”

Gruden, 62, is currently working for Barstool Sports as an NFL personality and analyst. He last worked in the NFL in 2023 as a consultant for the New Orleans Saints. Before that, he spent four years as the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach (2018-21).

Meanwhile, the Jets’ push for a new offensive coordinator surges on after their decision to part ways with Tanner Engstrand. The team officially announced it has interviewed five candidates: Frank Reich, Greg Roman, Darrell Bevell, Lunda Wells, and Ronald Curry.

As much criticism as Glenn and the Jets have received for their coaching carousel over the past month, it appears we can remove a failed pursuit of Gruden from the list of things to hold against them. The report appears to be false, at least according to Gruden.
