According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the New York Jets have traded wide receiver/special teamer Irv Charles to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick.
Charles, 29, signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2022. During his rookie season, he spent the year on Gang Green’s practice squad before making the team’s 53-man roster in 2023.
In 2023 and 2024, he logged the team’s highest special teams grade from Pro Football Focus, earning a 90.3 mark in 2023 and an 88.6 grade in 2024, which also ranked as the eighth best among NFL special teamers (min. 200 snaps).
However, in Week 13 of the 2024 season against the Miami Dolphins, he tore his ACL, which not only ended his 2024 campaign but also forced him to miss the entire 2025 season with the Jets.
After a historic season on special teams without Charles’ presence and the rise of gunners like Arian Smith and Qwan’tez Stiggers, the Jets seemingly deemed it okay to move on and acquire a potential draft pick along the way.
It is also important to keep in mind that while Charles is listed as a wide receiver, he has been solely a special-teams player throughout his career. In his two seasons with the Jets, he played in 25 games and did not record a reception on offense.
Ultimately, it was going to be an uphill climb for the 29-year-old to make the Jets’ roster. Credit is due to Darren Mougey for being able to finagle a potential Day 3 draft pick instead of outright cutting him.
