The New York Jets roster is a constant piece of clay to mold and instantly improved with the additions of rookies Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson.
Now, a year after Joe Douglas’s incredible 2022 NFL draft, this young New York Jets depth chart is suddenly ready to take the ultimate leap. Trading for future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers has this team among the favorites to win Super Bowl 58.
Aaron Rodgers activated, Nick Bawden sent to practice squad
Despite the mini-controversy it caused, the New York Jets did indeed active Aaron Rodgers to have him around the rest of the team. Had they not done so, he would have hit long-term IR, and thus, would not have had the ability to practice.
He takes the place of fullback Nick Bawden who is now on the practice squad.
Aaron Rodgers decision looms, Zaire Barnes to IR, Xavier Newman to active roster
Week 15’s matchup against the Washington Commanders marks the Aaron Rodgers decision. Will he or will he not play in 2023?
Additionally, linebacker Zaire Barnes hits the IR, whereas OL Xavier Newman replaces him on the 53-man active roster. Replacing Newman on the practice squad is OL Obinna Eze.
Jets make flurry of transactions, including designated Aaron Rodgers’ return from IR
Including designated Aaron Rodgers’s return from IR—an official 21-day period to be activated—New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas made a flurry of transactions on Nov. 28, 2023.
- Moved OL Chris Glaser from the active roster to the practice squad.
- Moved OL Duane Brown from reserve/injured to the active roster.
- Moved OL Xavier Newman to the active roster from the practice squad.
Six days prior, on Nov. 22, 2023, the Jets removed OL Dennis Kelly from the active roster, while adding DL Tanzel Smart back to the practice squad.
Tim Boyle named Jets starting QB, Zach Wilson to No. 3
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced that Tim Boyle will start against the Miami Dolphins in Week 12—for the first-ever NFL Black Friday game.
Embattled youngster Zach Wilson will dress and assume the No. 3 role, while veteran Trevor Siemian takes on backup duties.
Jets shockingly cut RB Michael Carter
In a surprising move, the New York Jets cut running back Michael Carter on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023.
NY Jets sign DT Perrion Winfrey
The New York Jets signed defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey, whose fourth-round draft status in 2022 signifies a talented player.
Only off-field troubles have kept Winfrey from possibly fulfilling his potential, and with Al Woods currently on IR, he’ll slide right into the interior defensive line rotation.
Jets sign Rodger Saffold to Practice Squad
With three more players going to IR—Connor McGovern, Wes Schweitzer, and Al Woods—the New York Jets signed veteran guard Rodger Saffold to the practice squad. They also signed defensive tackle Tanzel Smart and offensive lineman Dennis Kelly from the practice squad to the active roster.
In fact, by the time the trade deadline came and went, Joe Douglas’s active roster was at just 52 players, while making no trades.
Jarrick Bernard-Converse activated from PUP
Joe Douglas left his active roster at just 52 players following the Mecole Hardman trade; but that changed once the official prep for Week 8’s opponents, the New York Giants, commenced.
Rookie safety Jarrick Bernard-Converse was activated off of the PUP list and is now the 53rd man on the Jets active roster.
JBC has been injured since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft (foot). Missing all of training camp, as well as a significant portion of the season, the LSU defensive back is now ready to help his team on Sundays.
Jets trade Mecole Hardman back to the Chiefs
In what should be described as anything but surprising news, Joe Douglas and the New York Jets traded wide receiver Mecole Hardman back to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Jets send a seventh-rounder with Hardman and snag a sixth-round pick in return.
NY Jets sign QB Trevor Siemian
After the frustrating 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots in NFL Week 3, the New York Jets signed journeyman quarterback Trevor Siemian.
It marks Siemian’s second stint with the Jets, as he backed up starter Sam Darnold for Adam Gase’s 2019 squad. It was Siemian who started the team’s Week 2 primetime game against the Cleveland Browns, only to leave the game injured and early.
From there, Luke Falk took the reins until Darnold returned in Week 5 to defeat the Dallas Cowboys, 24-22.
Aaron Rodgers is out for the season
The New York Jets‘ worst fears have been realized, as quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss the entirety of the 2023 NFL season with a complete ruptured Achilles tendon.
Zach Wilson immediately assumes the No. 1 quarterback spot on the depth chart. Whether or not Joe Douglas brings in a veteran quarterback to play alongside Wilson, remains to be seen. Who that may be is also a major question.
NY Jets’ Initial 53-Man Roster is Unveiled
With Aaron Rodgers in town, everything feels different. This is especially the case in the injury department, as Robert Saleh’s team enters Week 1 with few injuries.
Aside from the stunning Corey Davis retirement news, New York is relatively healthy—which means the initial 53-man roster looks pretty impressive.
The main surprise is at wide receiver, where the Jets decided to keep seven players, including youngster Irv Charles, as well as two undrafted rookies, Jason Brownlee and Xavier Gipson.
Jets Acquire Aaron Rodgers from Packers
Very rarely is a talented and young NFL roster with a need at the quarterback position. This is the case due to the nature of the sport: Usually, competent quarterback play is required to showcase enough talent on the roster.
Starting 5-2 last year—and eventually winning seven games—is a remarkable feat considering the league-worst quarterback play the New York Jets had.
Aaron Rodgers is no dummy. He knows this fully, as do Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh. That’s why doing everything possible to target Rodgers in the 2022 offseason was the right call.
In the end, the Jets and Rodgers got it done, and, suddenly, a young and talented roster will be lifted by leaps and bounds thanks to quarterback excellence.
Sprinkle in what looks to be another solid draft class—with the likes of center Joe Tippmann and EDGE Will McDonald—and the young Jets have every reason to believe this roster is good enough to win a championship in 2023.

2023 Preseason Overview
A year ago, the New York Jets roster and depth chart was about one thing: youth.
Today, it’s about the Super Bowl.
Very rarely does a talented NFL roster find itself a need at the most important position in sports (quarterback), yet that’s where the 7-10 Jets were once the 2022 season concluded.
Fortunately, everybody involved, including Aaron Rodgers himself, recognized this en route to coming together.
