Zach Wilson is still a New York Jets quarterback. In spite of his new backup status—being the No. 2 to Aaron Rodgers’s No. 1—the Jets still strongly about Wilson’s talent.
A major turning point in the Zach Wilson NFL story came early during his rookie season.
After playing extremely well in August, and then in Week 1 in Carolina against the Panthers (when his offensive line gave him a chance), the BYU product hit a major wall against Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots in Week 2.
Aside from the surprising win over the Tennessee Titans, a good chunk of the middle of Wilson’s rookie season showcased poor quarterback play. Although the attributes were always apparent, Wilson allowed his mind to foul up his game.
The usually confident Wilson turned into an overthinking machine and simply could not turn it around. After a knee injury in New England, that sidelined him for four games, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft beat the Houston Texans in his return, only to then turn the lights on the rest of the way.
Wilson threw five touchdowns to just one interception (while also running in three) in the Jets’ last six games of the campaign. Despite a strong finish to the 2021 season, Wilson’s inconsistencies continued in 2022—which included a preseason injury that kept him sidelined in the Jets’ first three games.
Now, in 2023, Zach Wilson enters his third season as the New York Jets backup quarterback.
Zach Wilson takes charge after Aaron Rodgers injury
No matter how hard they try, they cannot kill Zach Wilson. The former “future face of the franchise” is now back in the saddle as the New York Jets quarterback.
Aaron Rodgers’s torn Achilles tendon shoved Wilson into a tough situation in Week 1, and he delivered while leading the Jets to a 22-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Perhaps taking a step back is what’ll turn out to be the best thing for Zach Wilson. The kid has all the talent in the world, but his mind moves a million miles a minute when the spotlight is shining brightly on Sunday.
The Zach Wilson stats area isn’t anything New York Jets fans will proudly boast to rivals.

While it’s true that it’s not ideal to have a second-overall draft selection playing the backup quarterback role, the NFL’s current rookie contract structure doesn’t destroy the idea entirely.
The Zach Wilson salary structure allows Joe Douglas to keep hope alive for the future while simultaneously allowing Aaron Rodgers to lift the franchise in the meantime.
