Former NFL QB: ‘Kellen Mond or Kyle Trask will be better than Zach Wilson’

Shaun King is not too big of a Zach Wilson fan

Appearing on FOX Sports Radio, former NFL quarterback Shaun King sounded off on his lack of confidence regarding New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson.

“You can’t tell me that Zach Wilson was the second-best player in this past year’s draft … That pick is going to age terribly. I’m on record as saying Kellen Mond or Kyle Trask will be better NFL quarterbacks than Zach Wilson. Write that down. Write that down.”

The clip shared by FOX Sports Radio’s Twitter account does not include any reasoning from King to back up his bold claims.

King was chosen by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 50th overall pick in the second round of the 1999 NFL draft. He went on to play five seasons in Tampa Bay, starting 22 games and posting a strong 14-8 record.

The Tulane product and St. Petersburg, FL native wasn’t terribly productive with the Bucs, though. He completed 368 of 654 passes (56.3%) for 26 touchdowns, 20 interceptions, and 4,064 yards (6.2 per attempt), earning a passer rating of 75.4.

In the 2000 season – his second in the NFL – King started all 16 games and led Tampa Bay to a 10-6 record. However, he was replaced by veteran Brad Johnson the following season, who ended up leading the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory in 2002.

King’s career wrapped up in Arizona, where he spent one season with the Cardinals in 2004. He started two games (0-2 record) and struggled mightily as he completed 47 of 84 passes (56.0%) for one touchdown, four interceptions, and 502 yards (6.0 per attempt), garnering a 57.7 passer rating.

As a native of the Tampa area and a former Buccaneer, King may be a little biased to Kyle Trask, the former Florida quarterback who was chosen by the Buccaneers with the 64th overall pick in the second round of this year’s draft.

Kellen Mond was selected two picks after Trask, going to the Minnesota Vikings with the 66th overall pick in the third round.

Zach Wilson is preparing to make his preseason debut against the New York Giants on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. ET). He will be the lone starting quarterback to appear in that game as Daniel Jones will be sitting it out.

Trask will make his preseason debut on Saturday as the Buccaneers host the Cincinnati Bengals. Mond will not play in the Vikings’ preseason opener against the Broncos on Saturday, as he recently returned from the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list and is still “catching up,” according to head coach Mike Zimmer.

Wilson will face Trask’s Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium on January 2.

Or Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields or Mac Jones or Trey Lance or Ian Book or Davis Mills or Sam Ehlinger will be better than Zach Wilson. Book it.
