New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is back in action

The New York Jets‘ 2022 season has officially begun.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced that starting quarterback Zach Wilson has been medically cleared by doctors and will return to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers barring any unexpected setbacks.

It includes a six-week absence for Wilson that held him out of the team’s first three games. Joe Flacco started in Wilson’s place and led the team to a 1-2 record.

Wilson will attempt to build on an improved finish to his rookie season. After producing a 4:9 ratio of total touchdowns to turnovers over his first six games, Wilson returned from a four-game absence to post a 9:3 ratio of total touchdowns to turnovers over his final seven contests. It was also clear when grading Wilson on a play-by-play basis that he was a better quarterback at the end of the year than he was at the start of it.

The year-two development of Wilson has always been the primary storyline of the Jets’ 2022 season. The team does not have championship aspirations this year, but if it could come out of the season knowing that Wilson is definitively their franchise quarterback, it would be a successful season regardless of the win-loss record.

Unfortunately for Wilson, he returns to the team amidst a rough time for the offensive line. With George Fant headed to injured reserve, Conor McDermott is set to start at left tackle this Sunday. The Jets recently signed veteran tackles Mike Remmers and Cedric Ogbuehi to prepare for the rocky road ahead, but neither is expected to be ready to start in time for this Sunday.

From here on out, all eyes will be on No. 2. Is he the guy?
