Breaking down the studs and duds from New York Jets’ 2023 preseason opener

After months of salivating over the smallest tidbits of news – from workout videos to interviews and practice clips – we finally have some real football to break down as the New York Jets kicked off the 2023 season with the Hall of Fame Game.

Many starters didn’t strap up, as this was an extra preseason game for the Jets. But that doesn’t mean that there would be plenty of storylines to watch out for.

The full, member-only Jets vs. Browns film breakdown can be found at the bottom of this article (must be a Jets X-Factor member and logged into the site).

How would Zach Wilson bounce back from a horrific end to the 2022 season? Now fighting for a chance to show he deserves to be a potential long-term option for the Jets, would he show more poise, more accuracy, and the ability to click through his reads?

After suffering back-to-back season-ending injuries, how would Mekhi Becton look? He is a vital piece of the Jets’ offensive line in 2023. Whether Becton can play well and stay healthy are factors that could drastically affect the outcome of the Jets’ season.

Following a few weeks of being criticized for being buried on the depth chart just weeks into his rookie season, how would rookie center Joe Tippmann look? Could he show his potential and quiet some early doubters?

It was a storyline-filled game for the offensive line, as Becton and Tippmann were not the only linemen who drew attention. What about Max Mitchell? With the 2022 fourth-round pick competing to start at right tackle, did he show signs that he is ready to be an opening-week starter?

Would some of the young pups on defense stand out? Specifically, players like rookie Will McDonald and Jamien Sherwood. While they are lower on the depth chart right now, they are important pieces to the Jets’ depth and to their long-term defensive future.

Did any of the Jets later round selections in the 2023 NFL Draft standout? Carter Warren, Izzy Abanikanda, Zaire Barnes, and Zack Kuntz all saw plenty of snaps in their first professional action.

All of this and much more is broken down on this episode of Blewett’s Blitz!
