It doesn’t look like any significant changes are coming for the New York Jets’ coaching staff
The New York Jets are truly running it back.
Per Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the team is not expected to make any significant changes to their coaching staff.
The #Jets are expected to make some staff changes but nothing significant.
All three coordinators (Hackett, Ulbrich, Boyer) will return, and the expectation going into the weekend was that Keith Carter and Todd Downing would be back too, per sources.
More on the coming…

The Jets will return Joe Douglas, Robert Saleh, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, and special teams coordinator Brant Boyer. Moreover, they seemingly do not plan on moving on from quarterbacks coach Todd Downing or offensive line coach Keith Carter.
It is difficult to fathom how the Jets could take such inaction after the season they had on the offensive side of the football. They spent most of the season with a third-down conversion rate poised to be a 50-year low in NFL history. They scored a league-worst 1.12 points per drive on offense.
Even if they do not want to fire Hackett for Rodgers’ sake, bringing back Downing and Carter defies understanding. The Jets allowed 65 sacks and took a league-high 42 pre-snap penalties. Despite rush yards over expected totals that were near the top of the league, Breece Hall looked like a pedestrian back in the run game for most of the season due to the Jets’ ineffective run-blocking. Furthermore, there is reason to suspect that their offensive line injuries can be traced back to Carter.
Meanwhile, Zach Wilson made some progress this season but still failed to come anywhere near living up to his potential. The offense fell apart with Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian under center. Look no further than the Cleveland Browns and old friend Joe Flacco to see how an aging veteran can still lead a competent offense.
Still, Woody Johnson seems intent on truly handing the entire coaching staff a mulligan due to Aaron Rodgers’ injury. The team’s fate in 2024 could hinge on that decision.
The mulligan isn’t ONLY on Roger’s injury. FACT, the Jets OL was ravaged by injury and NO other team had more injuries on the OL. No team wins with OL changes like the Jets had, something like 2 LT’s, 5 different guys snap the ball, 7 RG’s and 5 RT’s, so based on that, plus losing Rogers, I’m ok with the mulligan. Also, fact NE, scored the fewest points in the league, so THEY had the worst offense. If you watched them week in and week out and hammered them the same way we do the Jets, you’d be saying “how horrible.” They had 119 yards last week. Breece had more himself.
Now, that being said, they could make 1 or 2 changes on the staff that would make a big difference. It’s WAAAYY past time to move on from Calabrese, the OL, and Passing game could use a boost. Adding, someone like Frank Reich, Jay Gruden, Jim Caldwell, Pep Hamilton or Mike Munchak to add some experience would be a huge help, provided they share the same overall philosophy.
I still believe they never found the right replacement for Greg Knapp. They could use a boost.
If Aaron gets hurt again, we’ll be in a good spot to pick a QB next year.
I think they can pick one this year to develop. 10 is one of those interesting spots to draft, I’m not sure you get the top OT, or one of the top 2 WR’s, they may be faced with one of the stud DL’s. I love a guy like Sweat, but it would be better if they trade back at that point….if there is a taker. Perhaps picking up and OL later in round 1 and maybe getting a development QB in round 2.
It may not be a popular theory but the Packers are in the playoffs again. I’m not sure if Love will ever be a superstar but he’s clearly improving enough to make them a contender. They have the youngest team in the league. The “GB model” of having a QB in waiting seems to work.
