C.J. Stroud and the History of Rookie QB Runs
In the history of the NFL, only five rookie quarterbacks have ever reached a conference championship game. Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud will attempt to become the sixth to do it.
Perhaps more notably, this would be only the third time in NFL history that a rookie head coach and rookie quarterback duo have ever reached Championship Sunday. They’d join Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez in 2009 (New York Jets), and John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco in 2008 (Baltimore Ravens).
Of course, there’s very recent rookie quarterback success Stroud can point to as his model for success. Just last year, Brock Purdy made the NFC championship game as a rookie. Of course, Purdy did so with less than half a season of starting experience under his belt, whereas Stroud is coming off one of the greatest rookie seasons ever.
Stroud will have to do this on the road, though. Of the five rookie quarterbacks who’ve done this before, only Flacco and Sanchez did it on the road.
It’s a tough road to sled, but if Stroud wants to become the first rookie quarterback to ever start in the Super Bowl, it’s something he’s going to have to do.
bet365 NFL Playoff Odds: Texans vs. Ravens
- Baltimore Ravens -9.5 (-110, -450 moneyline)
- Houston Texans +9.5 (-110, +350 moneyline)
- Ravens-Texans Over-Under 44.0 (-110/-110)
The Baltimore Ravens are massive favorites in this one, and the public doesn’t think they’re big enough favorites.
Baltimore opened at 9-point favorites, but that’s now been pushed to 9.5 the day of the game. They’re given -450 odds to pull off the victory outright.
Meanwhile, the Houston Texans are given +350 odds to pull off the upset and reach championship weekend.
bet365 likes the defenses in this one. The point total is set at over/under 44.0 points, which is the low mark of the week.
Given the Baltimore defense, I guess it makes sense. But as last weekend showed us, elite defenses don’t always show up on the big stage.
