The New York Jets-Buffalo Bills rivalry is picking up steam
It might be a cool Tuesday in February, but one of the AFC East’s fiercest rivalries is heating up.
Buffalo Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins made headlines on Monday when an interview surfaced in which he called the New York Jets’ defense “weirdos,” saying the Jets’ defenders “play the sport to try to be cool.” Dawkins also said he “hates” New York’s defense and that they “are a bunch of dudes who just want to take pictures on Instagram.”
Sauce Gardner quickly responded with a post that defended his motives for playing football, saying, “I play this game because I love it,” but he didn’t stop there. Gardner took a more personal jab on Tuesday – and he wasn’t alone.
Gardner and Garrett Wilson both poked fun at Dawkins’ decision to conduct his interview shirtless. On Twitter, Gardner posted a picture of himself shirtless and wrote, “Just finished working out. Currently omw to do my very first shirtless podcast.” On Instagram, Wilson poked at Dawkins in a caption on his Instagram story.

Personally, I think this stuff is awesome – from both sides. I love that Dawkins spoke his mind with complete honesty and I love that Gardner and Wilson are responding. Intense rivalries are one of the most entertaining things in sports. When two teams truly dislike each other – especially when they are in the same division – it makes for world-class competition.
The Jets and Bills split their season series in each of the past two seasons, with three of the four games being decided by one score. This rivalry had already been rejuvenated. Now, it’s poised to reach a whole new level.
It might only be February, but you can be certain that both sides will remember this social media spat whenever they meet again on the football field.
