New York Jets and Mr. Irrelevant

The New York Jets‘ history with the final pick of the NFL draft is a short one. They’ve only made one Mr. Irrelevant pick in the franchise’s history. That came in the 1969 NFL/AFL draft—the first joint draft between the NFL and AFL, following Joe Namath’s triumph over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 3.

With the 442nd selection in the draft, the Jets selected Fred Zirkle. The Duke defensive back wound up declining the Jets’ contract offer and struck out for himself in the world outside of football.

Zirkle did pretty well for himself, becoming the CEO of Key Tronic. ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote an excellent piece about Zirkle’s journey after he declined to sign with the Jets (if you’re interested in learning more).

In reality, the Jets have never had a Mr. Irrelevant ever play for their franchise. So, it could be a first if they don’t trade their pick away this year (which is slotted in the Mr. Irrevelant slot). Although, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. The history of the pick isn’t great.

Brock Purdy is now considered the greatest Mr. Irrelevant in NFL history, given his success with the San Francisco 49ers. But before him, the well was dry. Kicker Ryan Succop was often considered the best before Purdy. Tae Crowder, a linebacker with the New York Giants, is also among the best ever.

Perhaps you can say teams are getting better with the Mr. Irrelevant pick as of late. But of the three examples mentioned above, only one has genuinely impacted the mainstream.

Instead, with a pick like this, teams are hoping for special teams contributors who they hope can stick around for their entire rookie contract. After all, the average Day 3 pick doesn’t last three years in the NFL (on average).

NFL Draft Odds: Mr. Irrevelant (Jets Pick No. 257 Overall)

In my recent Jets-centric seven-round mock draft, I have the team drafting Kansas safety Kenny Logan Jr. If you wanted to bet that he’d be this year’s Mr. Irrelevant, you could make a pretty penny.

At ESPN Bet, for instance, a safety is +1100 to be the position to get slapped with the Mr. Irrelevant tag. (And yes, DraftKings Sportsbook has a wide variety of NFL draft categories.)

Only kicker, punter and long-snapper have longer odds. Of course, you could go in the opposite direction and place a bet against me, going with the favorite position. That’d be quarterback, which is currently at +300.

If you want to find a happy medium, I did have the Jets selecting defensive tackle Evan Anderson with the pick before Mr. Irrelevant. So, him going last wouldn’t be a shock, and DT is +500 on the market right now, which is the second-shortest odds.

Or you could go completely off the board with your favorite player for the pick. After all, it’s the last pick of the draft, perhaps the most unpredictable pick of them all. That’s what makes the anticipation so much more fun.
