On the latest episode of “Hard Knocks,” it was revealed that the New York Jets attempted to sign two players that ended up with the Giants
The New York Jets made a concerted effort to upgrade their offensive line this offseason, and the latest episode of “Hard Knocks” confirmed as much.
During the offseason’s free agency period, the Jets offered interior offensive lineman Jon Runyan a two-year deal worth $9 million per year, with $17 million guaranteed.
The Giants were told that they had to top the deal, mainly due to the “Rodgers and Hackett connection” during their time in Green Bay. Ultimately, the Giants agreed to those terms, offering the veteran a bump to $10 million per year while matching the Jets’ guarantees.
This is a cool glimpse into the free agency process within an NFL front office. The #Giants learn that the #Jets have a better offer on the table for G Jon Runyan Jr.

Additionally, the Jets were in on eventual Giants acquisition Jermaine Eluemunor, who signed a two-year deal worth $14 million. The Jets also stole backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor away from their crosstown rival.
It was crystal clear that the Jets needed to address their offensive line in the offseason, and the organization evidently agreed. They were linked to almost every possible option in free agency and the draft, signaling an effort to ensure that the horrors of the 2023 unit are not repeated.
When it comes to the players landed by New York, though, it is plausible that the Jets got lucky in their failed attempts to sign Runyan and Elumunor.
Tyron Smith is one of the best offensive tackles in the league when healthy. Morgan Moses is a steady presence, while John Simpson brings powerful violence to the running game. Olu Fashanu has the talent to develop into one of the better pass blockers in the league.
The unit still has to come together in 2024 game action, but if they can stay healthy, the Jets will be thankful that they could not land two of their top targets.
