The New York Jets’ head coach spoke about the starting offensive line and the depth on the defensive side of the ball
Robert Saleh is feeling positive about the New York Jets’ roster on multiple fronts.
Speaking during his Friday media availability, the Jets’ head coach discussed the team’s management of the offensive line and the encouraging flashes from the back end of the defensive depth chart.
Regarding the offensive line, Saleh said the schedule for tackle Morgan Moses will be “sporadic” but that he is “excited” to get the veteran back on the field. He also spoke about getting the full starting five on the field together for the first time, and why it’s positive to work with different combinations to prepare for the “chaotic” nature of the NFL.
“Yeah, it’s always beneficial, but you know, at the same time, the league is chaotic. The odds of us playing with the same five all season are slim to none. So it’s good for them to work with one another and different combinations, as long as we maintain our communication. To answer your question, getting our Week 1 group out there as quickly as possible so they can gel, that definitely would be beneficial.”
Outside of the offense, Saleh spoke highly of second-year cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse.
“I thought he did a good job today. He flashed today, and I’m definitely excited to get back in the office to watch this tape, but it felt like he did a couple of good things today.”
The head coach also discussed the linebacker and safety rooms. Regarding the linebackers, Saleh said, “Every guy in that room is providing tremendous value, not only on defense but with special teams.” He also called it one of the “cooler competitions” on the team.
Speaking about the safeties, Saleh praised the developing nature of the room and the veterans leading it.
“Chuck [Clark] is getting his legs underneath him; I think he’s moving around really well. We know TA [Tony Adams]. Ashtyn [Davis] got another ball out today; it’s amazing how he does that. Then you got a bunch of young guys. Isaiah [Oliver]’s doing a really good job transitioning to safety, and then you’ve got your young guys back there who are slowly taking steps.”
Compared to previous seasons, there is a lot more balance in the flow of practice. This is not only due to the presence of Rodgers but also to an improved offensive line and more depth on defense.
As a result, the Jets’ training camp practices have been extremely competitive and entertaining. It will be interesting to see how the depth looks against other teams, but if it holds up, the Jets will likely have a much deeper roster this season than in 2023.
