Garrett Wilson has some thoughts on the New York Jets’ offensive struggles.
Former Jets linebacker and current radio host Bart Scott asked Wilson whether the Jets are “struggling with their identity and trying to find it,” citing that it “feels like you guys (the Jets) try a lot of different stuff.” Wilson offered a thought to the contrary.

“I don’t think we do a lot of different stuff, to be honest. I watch football on Sundays, and I see a lot of teams mix it up and stuff like that. I don’t think we do that,” Wilson said in response to whether the Jets are trying to do too much.
“I think we know our identity. It’s just about going out and executing it or figuring out if it’s going to work. I don’t think we’re trying a lot of different things. I know, personally, my route tree hasn’t been what it has been the last two years as far as the stuff I’ve been running. It’s just about figuring out if it’s the right identity and whether it’s going to win games.”
Wilson’s quote was shared in the media out of context, making it seem as if he was criticizing the Jets for being too simplistic. On Tuesday, Wilson took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify the context surrounding his answer.

Wilson’s comments align with how quarterback Aaron Rodgers is approaching the team’s offensive struggles. The future Hall-of-Famer has said, specifically in reference to his cadence, that the team’s overall execution must be better.
The Jets know what type of offense they want to be and are attempting to utilize their personnel to accomplish those goals. In their eyes, execution is the missing piece.
It would be naive, though, to say that coaching has not played a role in the struggles. Between questionable personal usage, in-play communication, and play-calling, the Jets’ struggles expand beyond just execution.
Going forward, the calculus is simple for New York. They must figure out how to execute their chosen offensive identity or pivot to an entirely new one. Regarding the decision and the results, though, both outcomes will play a massive role in dictating the status of the team’s 2024 season.
