If everything goes well for the remainder of the 2024 season, the New York Jets’ interim head coach could become their full-time head coach.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the team will consider retaining Jeff Ulbrich beyond 2024 if things go well this season.

“The Jets will give interim coach Jeff Ulbrich a chance to earn the permanent job, with 12 full games remaining in the season,” Schultz reported. “This was part of the reasoning behind letting Robert Saleh go so early. Ulbrich is very well-liked in the organization, and with plenty of time left, the team still believes they can reach the goals they set. Ulbrich will have the opportunity to lead them there. A former player, Ulbrich has been considered a head coaching candidate in previous years.”

From this perspective, the Jets’ line of reasoning is sound. If they knew that Saleh was on his way out of the organization anyway, giving Ulbrich some runway is a good decision. The Jets can evaluate how Ulbrich handles a talented roster and a high-pressure environment for the rest of the season.
New York’s paths have become clear as a result of this decision. If Ulbrich is successful and leads the Jets to the playoffs, he has a chance to stick around and become the new full-time head coach. If the Jets falter and struggle the rest of the season, New York can begin a full reset with a new head coach.
One way or the other, the Jets are in for a very entertaining rest of the season.
