With the New York Jets officially eliminated from playoff contention and the regular season nearing its conclusion, speculation surrounding the team’s head coach vacancy is underway, and one former Jet has already expressed serious interest in the position, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
On the “Flight Deck Podcast,” Cimini claimed that former Jets cornerback and current Detriot Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is “really interested” in the team’s head coaching position.
“Now, I have not talked to Aaron in quite some time, but I can tell you that he really is really interested in the Jets position,” said Cimini. “I think he’d love to talk to them about it. He interviewed with the Jets in 2021. I think at that particular time, he was just getting on the head coaching radar, but obviously, his stock with the Lions’ success is at an all-time high.”
One of the main reasons Cimini speaks so highly about the potential Glenn-Jets marriage is due to the potential gaps he can fill with the organization.
“He is a good leader; he knows how to change a culture,” Cimini added. “There is no better example in sports than the Detroit Lions.”
The Jets selected Glenn in the first round of the 1993 NFL draft, and he played for the team for eight seasons. Glenn collected 338 solo tackles, five forced fumbles, 24 interceptions, and two Pro Bowl appearances.
Retiring following the 2008 season, Glenn returned to the Jets for two more seasons as a personnel scout before transitioning into coaching.
In his fourth season as the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator, Glenn commands one of the league’s premier defensive units. Through Detroit’s first 13 games this season, their defense allowed the second-fewest points per game (18).
Aaron Glenn’s strong ties to the New York Jets, coupled with his current successes with the Detroit Lions defense, make him a compelling candidate for the team’s head coaching job this offseason.
