The New York Jets can’t even lose properly.
At least, that’s what a contingent of their pro-tank fans believe. But Breece Hall was having none of it after the Jets beat the Miami Dolphins, 32-20, in the season finale.
One Jets fan expressed his dismay at the Jets’ win, posting, “#Jets are going to win another meaningless game at the end of the year and mess up their draft position. Unreal”.
Hall fired back a profane response.
The victory over Miami improved the Jets’ record to 5-12, locking up the No. 7 spot in the draft. A loss would have placed them one spot higher at No. 6.
While Hall’s overarching point that fans will never be satisfied is taken, how he and other Jets players continue to interact with fans leaves a lot to be desired. It is a fan’s prerogative to post about a team on X and an athlete’s responsibility not to engage.
Whether it is Sauce Gardner getting into arguments with fans about his performance, Garrett Wilson having an apoplectic fit on the sideline, D.J. Reed directing profanity at NFL officials on X, or a slew of other incidents, Jets players seem to be incapable of keeping a low profile.
The void of leadership on the team clearly enables this, but it is not the only factor. At some point, these players must fairly evaluate their performance and take responsibility for their respective parts in the Jets’ losses.
For example, Gardner’s deflection of blame for his poor tackling against the Cardinals showed a complete lack of accountability. Hall’s interaction with a fan shows a certain level of arrogance considering how poorly he has played this season.
The Jets have bigger fish to fry than arguing with a disgruntled fan after a game. But many of their players still seem unable to let it go.
