In the wake of the NFL’s divisional weekend, the New York Jets’ general manager and head coach searches are chugging along.
The Jets have scheduled a Tuesday interview with head coach candidate Aaron Glenn, which will be his second overall interview with the team and his first in-person. Also on Tuesday, the Jets will have their second interview with general manager candidate Lance Newmark, according to Adam Schefter.
Newmark is the most closely connected GM candidate to Glenn. Before joining the Washington Commanders as their assistant general manager this past season, Newmark spent the previous 26 seasons with the Detroit Lions, overlapping with Glenn for three seasons (2021-23).
In Detroit, Newmark held the following roles:
- Senior director of player personnel (2022-23)
- Director of player personnel (2016-21)
- Director of college scouting (2015-16)
- Assistant director of college scouting (2008-14)
- National scout (2005-07)
- Area scout (1999-2004)
- Player personnel department assistant (1998)
As a candidate with a scouting background, no prior GM experience, and a previous role of assistant general manager, Newmark is one of the three Jets candidates whose resumes most closely resemble those of the NFL’s most successful general managers, joining Jon-Eric Sullivan and Darren Mougey (full breakdown here).
Newmark joined the Commanders as their assistant general manager in 2024 following the hiring of Adam Peters as general manager. Peters previously served as the San Francisco 49ers’ general manager (2021-23). According to the Commanders’ website, Newmark “reports directly to Commanders General Manager Adam Peters and oversees Washington’s personnel and scouting departments.”
Together, Newmark and Peters helped reshape a four-win Commanders team with no playoff victories since 2005 into a 12-win team that is preparing to compete for the NFC championship this weekend.
