NY Jets coach puts top-5 QB prospect through individual workout

The arrival of the NFL Scouting Combine means it’s time to not only overanalyze the on-field drills, but to read too deeply into every player-team interaction that takes place.

The latest report surrounding the New York Jets involves one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2025 draft class. According to ESPN’s Turron Davenport, Jets quarterbacks coach Charles London was seen putting Alabama’s Jalen Milroe through an individual workout while the other quarterback prospects were running.

According to NFL Mock Draft Database’s consensus big board, Milroe is currently the No. 46 overall prospect and No. 4 quarterback prospect in the 2025 draft class. He joins Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart (No. 38 overall) as the two quarterbacks who are projected to be taken in the second round. The Jets own the 42nd overall pick, potentially giving them an opportunity to select one of the two players.

Milroe boasts a tantalizing ceiling due to his elite talent as a rusher (20 rushing touchdowns in 2024). However, he is widely viewed as a project in the passing game. Milroe’s accuracy and ball security are subpar for a quarterback entering the NFL.

In 2024, Milroe ranked 28th out of 53 qualified Power 4 quarterbacks with an adjusted completion percentage of 72.6%. Comparatively, many of Milroe’s competitors in the 2025 draft class placed in the top 10, including Shedeur Sanders (81.8%, 2nd), Will Howard (79.6%, 3rd), Jaxson Dart (77.7%, 4th), Cam Ward (76.5%, 9th), and Quinn Ewers (75.8%, 10th).

Additionally, Milroe tied for the 12th-most interceptions among Power 4 passers with 11, despite placing 38th with 324 pass attempts. In SEC play, Milroe threw five touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

In multiple areas, Milroe does not project as an ideal fit for the Jets’ offensive scheme under new coordinator Tanner Engstrand. Among the top nine quarterback prospects on the consensus big board as of mid-February, Milroe had the worst passer rating over the middle and the worst passer rating off play action – two vital components of the Detroit Lions offensive scheme that Engstrand hails from.

Milroe is a fascinating evaluation for London, who was hired as the Jets’ new quarterbacks coach in February. The 50-year-old coach, who played running back for Duke University, spent his first 17 years as a coach primarily focusing on the running back position. In 2021, he transitioned to quarterbacks coach with the Atlanta Falcons. He’s since served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Tennessee Titans (2023) and the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks (2024).

The fact that London briefly put Milroe through a workout does not necessarily mean the Jets are planning to target him in the draft. Nonetheless, due to the alignment between Milroe’s projected draft position and the Jets’ current slot in the second round, he is a prospect worth monitoring over the next couple of months. If the Jets decide to go the bridge route at quarterback, it would not be surprising if they decided to use a post-first-round selection on a prospect they could patiently develop.
