Justin Fields and the New York Jets are undoubtedly connected to one another this free agency period, but how close are the two sides to agreeing to a deal?
The latest has Fields needing to “know more” about the Jets’ current situation, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“Free-agent quarterback Justin Fields has been talking with the Steelers but needs to understand more about the Jets situation and offer that can’t come until after noon today,” Schefter wrote on his official X (formerly Twitter) account Monday morning. “So (it’s) the Steelers and Jets, with Fields mulling options and Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson waiting in the wings.”
Fields, 26, has been much discussed this offseason. The Jets’ decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers in early February suddenly thrust the franchise into a vacant quarterback situation.
Head coach Aaron Glenn does not have a viable option to play at the position other than veteran Tyrod Taylor.
Although Fields has yet to prove he could assume a franchise quarterback role, many believe there’s potential there. The former first-round pick of the Chicago Bears was selected in the same draft New York tabbed Zach Wilson at No. 2.
In 6 games started this past season for the Pittsburgh Steelers (10 total games), Fields threw for 1,106 yards and 5 touchdowns with just 1 interception. He also rushed for 289 yards and 5 touchdowns on 62 official attempts.
Fields made it crystal clear he’s looking for a situation where he’d have a chance to be the clear No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart. Avoiding another Russell Wilson situation is most likely his highest priority—save for the salary and contractual terms—and many think the New York Jets are the perfect landing spot.
If Justin Fields does land in Northern New Jersey, expect a completely different offense in 2025. It’ll feature zone reads and quarterback-designed runs, mirroring something that of Jalen Hurts’s Philadelphia Eagles offense to a certain degree.
