Despite adding four defensive linemen in free agency, the New York Jets still need to add rotational pieces to the defensive line.

With a deep draft class at the position, Jets general manager Darren Mougey has a prime opportunity to address the need. One underrated defensive line prospect already loves the Jets’ vision.

Appearing on FanSided’s “Stacking the Box” with host Justin Fried, SMU’s Elijah Roberts revealed he had a “great” meeting with the Jets and defensive line coach Eric Washington.

“The Jets have been great. I really liked meeting with the new DL coach, he was great. They also went to my school two days ago,” said Roberts. “My coach called me about it and told me he had a great conversation with the Jets. He really liked the plan they had set out for me if I were to go there. “

Roberts initially committed to Miami (FL), spending three seasons as a Hurricane. While playing in a limited role, Roberts appeared in only 20 games across three seasons, logging 0.5 sacks. Roberts then transferred to SMU in 2023, spending his final two collegiate seasons as a Mustang, where he began to stand out. Playing in 27 games, Roberts recorded an impressive 17.5 sacks, adding four forced fumbles and 24 tackles for loss.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and 285 pounds, Roberts stands out for his explosiveness and versatility. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Roberts’ 4.78 time in the 40-yard dash was impressive for his large frame. He has experience across SMU’s defensive line, rotating between the edge and the interior.

Roberts is one of the draft’s fastest-rising prospects. Currently ranked as the No. 142 overall prospect on the consensus big board (via NFL Mock Draft Database), Roberts was down at No. 204 on February 18 and No. 245 on January 9. If his trajectory continues, he could find himself sneaking into day two.

The Jets have a few draft picks in the range where Roberts is projected to be selected. They possess their own fourth-round pick (No. 110), their own fifth-round pick (No. 145), and the Los Angeles Rams’ fifth-round pick (No. 162).

With the Jets needing rotational defensive line help, Roberts’ versatility could provide a key boost to their defensive front heading into the 2025 season.
