ESPN’s Matt Miller submits most ambitious NY Jets draft take yet

ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller submitted arguably the boldest suggestion for the New York Jets' seventh overall pick.

Perhaps Penn State’s Tyler Warren isn’t the only tight end the New York Jets should consider selecting with the No. 7 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Speaking with me on “NY Flight Jets Talk,” ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller shared his thoughts on what Darren Mougey should do with the selection, and it’s a unique take.

“Colston Loveland from Michigan is where I would go,” said Miller. “He can create, he can make defenders miss, he is almost like a big wide receiver that you can play in the slot, he can play inline. I am a huge Colston Loveland fan. Loveland is my No.1 tight end; he is a top 10 player for me. If he is there at seven, that would be tough for me to pass up.”

Loveland, 21, was a four-star recruit coming out of high school. He committed to Michigan, where he spent all three of his collegiate seasons.

Appearing in 39 games as a Wolverine, Loveland compiled 117 receptions for 1,466 yards and 11 touchdowns. In 2024, the Idaho native appeared in 10 games, catching 56 passes for 582 yards and five touchdowns while earning second-team All-American honors.

Ranked No. 20 on NFL Mock Draft Database’s consensus big board, Loveland is an impressive athlete with crisp route-running ability and natural pass-catching skills.

While selecting Loveland over Warren would be a surprise, it remains a possibility; anything can happen on draft night. Jets X-Factor’s Michael Nania recently provided a detailed breakdown comparing the two prospects.

With less than one month until the draft, the Jets have a clear need at tight end. Free-agent addition Stone Smartt and fourth-year player Jeremy Ruckert are currently the team’s top two options, combining for fewer than 650 career yards over three seasons.

Adding Loveland could significantly bolster the position room for Gang Green.
