New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields may walk and talk with the swagger of a franchise quarterback, but even he understands the pressure being thrust upon him in 2025.
The former first-round pick is trying to show the rest of the league that he can be a quality starter. To do that, he has to find a way to help turn the Jets into something they haven’t been for 14 years.
A winner.
That’s not the only pressure facing Fields in 2025, though. After failing to produce consistently in stints with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers, the Ohio State product is aware that this may be his last chance at a starting job.
It keeps him grounded at the start of Jets training camp.

Fields was not perfect during Wednesday’s practice. While he connected with Garrett Wilson, the signal-caller struggled at times with some of the major concerns that have followed him around throughout his career.
Even with those processing and delivery issues, Fields is keeping an open mind about his game and his team going forward.
“We’re just kind of picking up where we left off at the end of OTAs,” Fields said. “I felt like, towards the end of OTAs, we kept improving, and we were in a good spot.
“So, today was really just about picking up where we left off, and I think we did that. I think guys were lining up faster, guys weren’t thinking as much, so it was good.”
Like every other starting quarterback in the NFL, Fields will be judged not just by whether he can throw a football far or accurately. He is also being tasked with improving a five-win team from the year prior.
Considering a Hall-of-Fame quarterback was at the helm for those five games, Fields knows that achieving the goals he is looking to achieve will not come easy.
That doesn’t mean he’s taking a backseat, though.
“Winning games, winning a lot of games, making the playoffs, I think that’s number one on my list for this team, and winning the division as well,” Fields said. “I think those are the goals that are set forth. But, of course, before we do all that stuff, we got to win our division and go out and really get better each and every day.”
This, of course, is the right answer from Fields. Regardless of how he performs on the field, if he can help turn the Jets into a winner, it will fundamentally change his career outlook moving forward.
A playoff berth may seem like a lofty goal, but that is the start for a franchise that hasn’t sniffed an appearance in 14 years.
It may be enough to save Fields’ NFL career if accomplished.
