The New York Jets already needed help on the interior of their defensive line. Then, Byron Cowart’s injury made the need even more pressing.
Enter Harrison Phillips.
The Jets traded for Phillips and Jowon Briggs on the same day to address their issues at defensive tackle. While the 24-year-old Briggs brings upside, Phillips is a proven starter who has logged 62 career starts in seven seasons, including a perfect 51 of 51 starts over the last three years with the Minnesota Vikings.
Coming in at 6-foot-3 and 307 pounds with 42 bench press reps to his name, Phillips is a ball of muscle. He’s made his name in the NFL as an active run stopper with a nose for the ball, logging an incredible 258 total tackles over the last four seasons, the fourth-most among defensive tackles behind Cameron Heyward, Christian Wilkins, and DeForest Buckner.
Phillips is expected to slot in alongside Quinnen Williams in the Jets’ starting lineup.
What should Jets fans expect from the veteran? How much will he improve the run defense? Does he offer anything as a pass rusher?
In the latest episode of Blewett’s Blitz, we unpack Phillips’ All-22 film to understand what he brings to the table.
