The New York Jets have elevated wide receiver Tyler Johnson from their practice squad ahead of their Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Announcing the move on Saturday, the team also confirmed that offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker was placed on injured reserve after tearing his triceps in practice earlier this week.
Johnson, a fifth-round pick of Tampa Bay in 2020, has played for the Buccaneers, Houston Texans, Las Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles Rams. Over four seasons, he has appeared in 49 games with eight starts, totaling 76 catches for 828 yards and four touchdowns.
Known for his contested-catch ability and dependable hands, Johnson has a career drop rate of 5%, while the 6-foot-1, 208-pound wideout owns a 70.6% success rate in contested-catch situations.
50 final New York Jets thoughts as 2025 opener approachesJohnson signed with Gang Green as an unrestricted free agent this offseason and made the Jetsโ initial 53-man roster, but was released after the club added three players via the NFL’s waiver wire after cutdown day. Given that he was a vested veteran, Johnson was not subject to waivers, and he rejoined the Jets’ practice squad.
The Jets are carrying just five receivers on their active roster to open the season โ Garrett Wilson, Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, rookie Arian Smith, and Xavier Gipson.
Johnson is eligible to be elevated from the practice squad for two more games before the team must sign him to the 53-man roster.
As New York opens its 2025 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Johnson is expected to see the field.
