Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers was a disaster for the New York Jets’ secondary. Their safety play was abysmal, cornerback Brandon Stephens struggled mightily, and nickel corner Michael Carter II wasn’t much better.
Aaron Rodgers, the team’s former quarterback, threw four touchdown passes in the 34-32 win. New York gave up two different two-score leads throughout the contest.
As bad as the secondary was collectively, there is a glimmer of hope for the Jets.
Sauce Gardner, the former two-time All-Pro corner, put forth the type of performance that showed his down year in 2024 was nothing more than a fluke. That changes the entire trajectory of New York’s defense in 2025.
Jets thrilled with All-Pro
Week 1’s matchup against DK Metcalf was a key battle to watch. The Pro Bowl receiver may have recorded four catches for 83 yards on the day, but only one of those catches came against Gardner (and it came off a lucky bounce).
More importantly for New York, they allowed Gardner to travel – something the previous regime (with their zone concept) was against.
According to Next Gen States, Gardner traveled with Metcalf for 30 of 34 pass coverage snaps. The lone catch from Metcalf came when Gardner had deflected a pass, but it richocheted off a Jet defender and landed in Matcalf’s hands late in the contest.
That alone had head coach Aaron Glenn thrilled.
“I thought Sauce did an outstanding job challenging DK,” Glenn said. “He’s a tough cover, I’ll tell you that, because there’s a lot of other things that go into that matchup as far as the run game also being a part of it. I think you saw Sauce do a really good job as far as his fit against the run, too.”
Allowing Gardner to travel changes the entire complexion of the Jets defense. His length, physicality, and speed made him one of the best young corners in the league.
Those intangibles allow Glenn to utilize Gardner more than any other coaching staff did previously.
“We’re going to ask him to do that on a number of occasions,” Glenn said. “It depends on the matchup, for the most part.”
New York’s other defensive backs will improve over time. They have too much talent to not be a good unit this year. With Gardner as the top dog of the room, though, the Jets know they have a corner who can go up against the best receivers in the league.
That’s something very few teams have at their disposal.
