As first reported by TMZ on Saturday afternoon, former New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was hospitalized in Indianapolis with “severe injuries” after being stabbed early Saturday morning. Sanchez is in town to call Sunday’s Raiders-Colts game for FOX Sports at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Through a statement released to social media, FOX Sports provided an update regarding Sanchez’s condition later on Saturday afternoon.
โMark Sanchez was injured in Indianapolis on Saturday and is currently recovering in the hospital in stable condition. We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his familyโs privacy during this time.โ
Sanchez, 38, was drafted sixth overall by the Jets in the 2009 draft. The USC star led the Jets to four playoff victories in New York, a franchise record for starting quarterbacks. All of those wins came on the road. His playoff magic helped the Jets make two appearances in the AFC championship game, including the team’s most recent appearance in January 2011.
A playoff riser, Sanchez thrived in his six postseason games for New York, completing 95 of 157 passes (60.5%) for 1,155 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. His career playoff passer rating of 94.3 ranks 16th in NFL history (min. 150 pass attempts), slotted directly between Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow.
After his time in New York, Sanchez appeared in games for the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and then-Washington Redskins, for whom he made his last NFL appearance in 2018. Sanchez retired from professional football in 2019, and since 2021, he has been calling NFL games for Fox as a color commentator.
