Six games into his first year as an NFL head coach, Aaron Glenn has looked in over his head.
One of his former New York Jets teammates thinks he needs more veteran support around him.
Speaking on Fanatics Sportsbook’s “The Schultz Report,” Glenn’s former teammate and the Jets’ 1996 first-round pick, Keyshawn Johnson, explained why he believes Glenn has struggled so much throughout his first stretch as New York’s commander in chief.
“He [Glenn] is a first-time head coach,” said Johnson. “You have to have somebody on that sideline or upstairs that is a veteran-type guy that can lean in and say, ‘Hey man, here is what we need to do.’ I consider Aaron Glenn will be there [with the Jets] at least for the start of next season, before the noise starts to point out that he needs to move on.”
While Johnson’s points are understandable, the Jets do, in fact, have a “game-management” coach who was brought in this offseason, Jon Berger, who holds over 30 years of NFL experience.
The New York native most recently served as the vice president of replay for the NFL (2023-24) after spending over 30 years with the New York Giants in various roles. During his tenure with the Giants, Berger collaborated closely with the team’s coaching staff, contributing to two of the organization’s Super Bowl wins.
Despite that, when it comes to game management, Glenn and the Jets have been as bad as it gets this season, as Jets X-Factor’s Michael Nania pointed out.
For a franchise thatโs turned โrock bottomโ into a yearly tradition, Glennโs growing pains are only the latest reminder that the Jetsโ toughest opponent remains themselves.
