A monitor located just outside the confines of Gillette Stadium read the New England Patriots’ two main goals to beat the New York Jets.
At the top of the list was a simple instruction: Stop the run.
Gang Green walked into the Thursday night clash against their bitter rivals amid a two-game win streak. New England did everything in its power to ensure the Jets’ ground game wouldn’t beat them, an area where New York had thrived in their prior two matchups.
New England was unable to achieve that goal entirely, but they still came away victorious in front of their home crowd.
New York recorded over 100 yards on the ground, but Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson reached the endzone three times and Drake Maye torched the Jets’ secondary in a 27-14 win by the Patriots over Gang Green, dropping New York to 2-8 on the season.
It was the Jets who got the scoring started on the opening drive of the game. Justin Fields completed two passes and ran for 28 yards while leading a 14-play drive that ate up over seven minutes of action to open the game.
His five-yard touchdown run gave New York a 7-0 lead.
New England would respond with their own score on the opening drive. Rookie running back Tre’Veon Henderson accounted for 27 yards on the team’s 13-play, 69-yard drive that also ate over seven minutes of game action. His seven-yard touchdown run tied the score at seven apiece.
Henderson would score again just seven minutes later on another seven-yard touchdown run to give the Patriots a 14-7 lead.
After their opening drive touchdown, the Jets had little for an encore. New York went three-and-out on their next three possessions that included poor throws from Fields and a deep drop by new receiver Adonai Mitchell.
Luckily, a 45-yard field goal attempt by New England went wide right before the half, keeping the Jets’ deficit at just seven going into the third quarter.
After forcing a three-and-out, however, the Jets continued to struggle with many of the same issues that have plagued the offense for most of the 2025 season. Fields was called for intentional grounding after crossing midfield, and a personal foul called on right guard Joe Tippmann ended what was a promising drive.
From there, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye found Henderson in the back of the end zone for a six-yard score. Loud “MVP” chants followed the second-year quarterback off the field as he expanded the Patriots’ lead to 21-7.
Fields wouldn’t go away quietly, though. His 22-yard strike to an open John Metchie III got the Jets back within seven before the end of the third quarter.
A pair of fourth-quarter field goals from the Patriots put them back up by two scores.
Fields’ last gasp effort ended up coming short and ending New York’s two-game losing streak.
Now at 2-8, the Jets receive a mini bye week of sorts for playing on Thursday night.
They’ll be back on the field on Sunday, November 23, against the Baltimore Ravens.
Kickoff from Baltimore is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.
Jets Game Notes:
- New York was without two starters going into the game, with third-round cornerback AZ Thomas in concussion protocol, and wide receiver Garrett Wilson placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.
- Glenn elected to receive after winning the opening coin toss for the first time this season. He was rewarded with the Jets’ first opening drive touchdown since Week 16 of last season.
- Thursday was just the second game in the last five appearances in which Fields finished with over 116 yards passing.
- It was a rough debut for wide receiver AD Mitchell, who dropped several passes, including one that would have been a 40-yard completion.
