According to New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, Brady Cook will serve as the team’s starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor will both be sidelined as they continue to deal with injuries.
Fields, who is managing knee soreness, missed last week’s game against the Miami Dolphins. Taylor suffered a groin injury during Sunday’s loss and did not return.
With both veterans out, Cook played the majority of Week 14, completing 14 of 30 pass attempts (46.7%) for 163 yards and two interceptions while being sacked six times.
Now, the Missouri product will make his first NFL start on Sunday against a defense that ranks seventh in DVOA.
“He’s a very fiery guy,” Glenn said of Cook ahead of last week’s game. “The one thing that we do quite a bit in practice is we have a number of competition periods… He looks forward to it, he always asks when those opportunities are going to come for him to get a chance to do it, and we make sure we give him those reps.”
Signed to the Jets’ practice squad on Thursday, Adrian Martinez is expected to serve as the team’s QB2 in Jacksonville.
Martinez is no stranger to the Jets, having spent each of the past two preseasons with the organization. This season, he split time between the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad and active roster as injuries to Brock Purdy forced constant shuffling at quarterback.
During the Jets’ preseason, Martinez completed 58.8% of his passes for 352 yards, averaging 6.9 yards per attempt, with one touchdown and one interception.
Cook ultimately won the QB3 role and secured a practice squad spot over Martinez. However, with injuries piling up and the calendar flipping to Week 15, New York had limited alternatives. Martinez’s familiarity with the offense gives him an edge that most late-season options simply cannot offer.
With Cook and Martinez slated to be the two active quarterbacks on Sunday against the Jaguars, the matchup is likely to feel more like a preseason game for the Jets than a meaningful Week 15 clash.
